Dr. Humphreys's Sunscreen Picks

Many patients ask what brand of sunscreen to use. This depends on skin sensitivity and where it will be applied (face versus body). It is important to pick a product with a weight and sheerness that you like and will actually use. If you hate heavy sunscreens or those that make your eyes water, chances are you won’t use them! Here is a list (by no means exhaustive) of a few good products that are widely available in retail stores.

Facial sunscreens

Most people prefer to use sunscreens that are lighter to the touch on their face. Many people, such as those with rosacea, will complain of eye irritation with some types of sunscreen. These brands are light, non greasy, and formulated for sensitive skin since they lack fragrance and sensitizing compounds found in other sunscreens.

  • Ocean potion clear zinc SPF 45
  • Cetaphil Lotion SPF 50

Other good choices (lightweight but not hypoallergenic):

  • Neutrogena Healthy Defense SPF 35
  • Neutrogenua everyday protection SPF 30
  • Anthelios  (LaRoche) SPF 45

Other Sunscreens for Sensitive Skin

These brands are nonirritating and contain primarily physical blockers such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. They may be a bit heavier feeling and leave a fine white residue.

  • Vanicream SPF 60 (face)
  • Neutrogena `Sensitive Skin’ SPF 30 and 60
  • Neutrogena Pure and Free SPF 60
  • Aveeno Baby SPF 55
  • Water Babies SPF 30
  • Blue Lizard SPF 30+

Sheer sunscreens

These sunscreens are great for working out and for those who hate that heavy gloppy sunscreen feeling. Because these products are primarily chemical blockers they do have a greater potential for irritation especially if used around the face and eyes.

  • Coppertone Sport Spray SPF 30
  • Neutrogena Dry Touch SPF 45
  • Bullfrog Sport Gel SPF 36
